EffKSS - Energy-Efficient Separation of Submicron Emulsion Droplets in Co-Current Axial Cyclones of a Small, Non-Conventional Design in Combination with Annular-Gap Nozzles: A Separation Concept for Cooling Lubricants (KSS)

The research project aims to develop an unconventional, innovative separation system with hybrid properties for separating cooling lubricants (CL) in order to comply with emission limits based on operational requirements while simultaneously reducing pressure loss. The term “hybrid” refers to the system’s ability to simultaneously separate both liquid aerosols and submicron solid particles from one another.

The University of Wuppertal is conducting numerical, computer-aided flow simulations for the design and optimization of the system. The numerical results for flow and separator behavior are validated using experimental investigations, including flow measurements via laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) and particle image velocimetry (PIV), as well as particle size measurements.

The industrial partner, Elsässer Filtertechnik, applies these findings to industrial applications and conducts comprehensive investigations of the entire system.
