Lehrstuhl für Strömungsmechanik - Chair of Fluid Mechanics

Moodle course

The Moodle course for the PO2017 and PO2024 programmes in Fluid Mechanics is the same.

Bachelor’s degree (MB) under the PO2024 curriculum

Fluid Mechanics I

Summer semester: 4 SWS (2 + 2 SWS)

Overview

Students will master the fundamentals of one-dimensional fluid mechanics for incompressible fluids. In the practical sessions, students will develop the methodological skills required to describe and calculate fluid mechanics problems. The learning outcome is a basic understanding of fluid mechanics problems and the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems or to abstract practical problems into computational models.

Contents of Fluid Mechanics I:

  • Fundamentals and basic concepts of fluid mechanics, hydrostatics and aerostatics (hydrostatic equilibrium, forces on components, buoyancy and stability)
    • Characterisation and description of flow processes (laminar and turbulent flows)
    • Dimensionless parameters in fluid mechanics (derivation and application, Buckingham’s theorem)
    • One-dimensional analysis of flow processes (energy equation in steady-state and rotating systems, extended energy equation, pressure loss in components, system and pump performance curves)
    • Momentum and vorticity theorems
    • Aerodynamic drag on components

Lecturer

  • Prof. Dr. Ing. habil. Uwe Janoske

Examination

  • written examination (exam) 90 minutes
  • Lecture and tutorial materials will be made available via Moodle. The access code will be provided during the first lecture.
  • The date of the examination will be announced by the Examinations Office.

Notes

  • If you have any queries, please contact Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ing. habil. Uwe Janoske.

Fluid Mechanics II

Winter semester: 4 SWS (2 + 2 SWS)

Overview

Students will master the fundamentals of one- and multi-dimensional fluid mechanics for compressible and incompressible fluids. In the practical sessions, students will develop the methodological skills required to describe and calculate fluid mechanics problems. The learning outcome is a basic understanding of fluid mechanics problems and the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems or to abstract practical problems into computational models.

Contents of Fluid Mechanics II:

  • Multidimensional analysis of flow processes (derivation and application of the Navier–Stokes equations in different coordinate systems, potential theory)
  • One-dimensional gas dynamics (subsonic compressible flows, flows through convergent nozzles and Laval nozzles, vertical shock)
  • Introduction to flow measurement technology

Lecturer

  • Prof. Uwe Janoske, PhD (Eng.), Habil.

Examination

  • written examination (exam) 90 minutes
  • Lecture and tutorial materials will be made available via Moodle. The access code will be provided during the first lecture.
  • The exam date will be announced by the Examinations Office.

Notes

  • If you have any queries, please contact Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ing. habil. Uwe Janoske.
