DOFAM and how we will work

Droplet Oscillations Applications Fundamentals and Methods

We investigate how airflow, vibration and surface wettability govern droplet oscillation, coalescence and removal. The aim is to turn these mechanisms into better condensation, water collection, cleaning and filtration technologies.

We plan to combine high-speed imaging and flow measurements with numerical modelling, using shared cases to connect fundamental science with component design. Teams will develop focused subprojects and joint funding proposals, then pursue industry and living-lab partners to test promising systems under realistic conditions.

Recovering water from cooling-tower exhaust

We aim to recover water from warm, humid cooling-tower exhaust by collecting entrained droplets and condensing vapour, supporting lower freshwater demand in data centres and other facilities.

The interactive app lets users vary plume conditions, airflow, drift-eliminator design and cooling below the dew point. It estimates droplet collection, pressure drop, ideal fan air power, theoretical condensate yield and cooling duty to help compare design scenarios.

A screening tool: estimates are theoretical; actual recovery and electrical energy use depend on equipment performance and efficiencies.
